The first few weeks with your baby fly by, and with them the ideal time window for a newborn shoot. I explain when you should book, when the ideal time for the newborn shoot is and what options you have afterwards
The first few days after the birth of a newborn baby are so emotionally and physically intense that you barely have time to pause, let alone think about a photo shoot. However, the optimal time window for a classic newborn photo shoot passes more quickly than most parents would suspect. As a rule, the typical newborn poses are only possible without restrictions in the first two weeks after birth.
In this article, I’ll explain when it’s best to do your newborn shoot, when you should book and what you can do once the first few weeks have passed.
Here you will find a brief summary of the main content of the article:
- The ideal time frame for a newborn shoot: The ideal time for a newborn shoot is between the fourth and fourteenth day after birth. During this time, newborns still sleep a lot and can easily be placed in typical newborn poses. After the birth, you should give yourselves three days to get used to the new family situation. After 14 days, the first growth spurt begins so that the baby outgrows the newborn period.
- Early booking during pregnancy: It’s best to book your newborn shoot while you’re still pregnant. This way, you can reserve your provisional photo shoot date in good time and stay relaxed after the birth. We will then find the final date for the newborn shoot shortly after the birth.
- If you’ve missed the window of opportunity for a newborn photo shoot: even after the first 14 days, beautiful baby photos with alert, curious looks instead of sleeping poses are still possible. From the third week of life, babies become more attentive and show their first social interactions, which opens up other photographic possibilities.

Is there an optimal time for a newborn shoot?
As every pregnancy and every birth is different and newborns develop individually, there are of course differences in the circumstances. Perhaps you had a caesarean section or you were discharged from hospital a little later. You may be dealing with breastfeeding problems or you may simply need a few more days as a family to get used to the new family situation.
My honest answer as a photographer and mother of three is therefore: there is no one perfect time for a newborn shoot that is the same for all families and suits everyone. Nevertheless, there is a standard time window that has proven itself in practice and in which most babies show typical newborn behavior.
When should we do a newborn shoot?
I always recommend to my clients that the best time for their newborn shoot is between the fourth and fourteenth day after the baby is born. During this period of the first two weeks, newborns still sleep a lot and deeply. They can easily be placed in the typical curled-up newborn pose, which contributes to the unmistakable magic of newborn photos. Their limbs are still curved and their proportions are tiny, which reminds you of the safe time in the womb and gives you magical and emotional newborn pictures.
After the birth, it is advisable to wait a few days before the photo shoot. This will give you time to settle into the new family constellation and recover from the stresses and strains of the birth. You may still spend the first few days in hospital or need a day or two at home to settle in and find your new rhythm.
Here too, newborns develop and behave individually. While some babies are already very awake after one week, others are still fast asleep at the age of four weeks . However, it is more likely that your newborn will do well in the newborn shoot if it is photographed in the first fourteen days.

Why are the first two weeks after birth ideal for a newborn shoot?
My recommendation for the ideal time period for your newborn shoot is not only based on my experience as a newborn photographer and mother of three, but also has a practical background:
- Authentic newborn look: In the first two weeks after birth, newborns still have that tiny, innocent look: the delicate proportions, the cuddled limbs and the peaceful facial expression. All of this reminds you so much of the birth and makes for magical newborn photos and lifelong memories. Even in the first few days of life, your newborn changes quickly and after just a few weeks no longer looks like a newborn, but like a real baby.
- Lots of deep sleep: In the first two weeks, newborns usually sleep a lot (16-20 hours a day) and very deeply. Unlike older babies, they are hardly disturbed by external stimuli such as noises, light or changes of position and are usually not yet prone to colic. From the third week onwards, many babies start to kick and become much more active. This means that the newborn shoot is easy to plan in the first two weeks and tends to be calm and relaxed for everyone involved.
- Typical newborn poses: In the first few weeks, your newborn’s muscles are not yet strong enough to work against the familiar poses from the womb. Babies are still used to the tight confines of their mother’s womb, roll up instinctively and assume the characteristic newborn poses almost by themselves. Swaddling and swaddling also work particularly well in this phase. The babies are still very flexible, which makes it easier to position them in heart-warming newborn poses and results in particularly cute newborn photos.
- Clear newborn skin: In the first few days after birth, the skin of newborn babies is usually still clear, soft and even. After the first two weeks, baby acne or other skin blemishes may appear temporarily. This is completely normal, but makes editing newborn photos a little more complicated. If you do your newborn shoot early after the birth, you have the best conditions for natural and beautiful pictures.
- Family time together: In the first two weeks after the birth, the family often spends baby time together. The father is often still on vacation or parental leave and can still organize his daily routine freely. This is a great time for your newborn shoot together, in which you can capture this special first family phase in pictures. The first appointments, visits from family and friends and the return to work will follow in the near future.
- Relaxed parents: Some new parents are a little worried before the photo shoot whether your baby will cooperate well and sleep enough in the newborn shoot to photograph the newborn poses. In the first two weeks, your newborn still sleeps so deeply in the newborn shoot that you will definitely get wonderful pictures. And when the baby shoot is done early, you can concentrate fully on your baby and the other challenges of your young parenthood.
Choose and book early: Ideally during pregnancy
I recommend that you take care of your newborn shoot during your pregnancy and book a provisional appointment with your newborn photographer in good time. Experience has shown that you should take care of your newborn photographer during your pregnancy, at the latest in the last trimester.
If you are late in booking a newborn shoot, a specialized newborn photographer may already be fully booked. If you book your newborn shoot early, you can go into the last weeks of pregnancy all the more relaxed.
When choosing your newborn photographer, you should pay particular attention to these points:
- Specialized and experienced in newborn photography
- Offer for home story photography
- Sympathy and trust in the preliminary meeting
- Professional portfolio with newborn pictures that you like
- High-quality and stylish accessories
- Flexibility and reliability in scheduling
After the birth, you are busy with completely different priorities: Learning to breastfeed, coping with sleep deprivation, welcoming visitors and finding yourselves as a family. Once the newborn arrives, you’ll be thankful that you took care of a newborn photographer beforehand.
Premature or delayed birth: how to keep your newborn photo shoot schedule flexible
Since you can’t plan your delivery date and the other circumstances in advance when booking the newborn shoot, as a specialized newborn photographer I always offer flexible scheduling. Here’s how to make an appointment with me:
- Provisional date: By booking the newborn shoot, you reserve a provisional shoot date after the expected date of birth (ET).
- Birth notification: You inform me as soon as possible, within 24-48 hours after the birth, via WhatsApp
- Final shooting date: We will then find a final date for your newborn shoot together
I only accept a limited number of newborn shoots in a certain period of time. This allows me to be flexible enough to offer you a shoot in the first few weeks. In the event of a premature or delayed birth, we will postpone the date for our photo session accordingly.
Feel free to get in touch if you haven’t booked a newborn shoot yet. I will gladly try to fulfill your wish and fit you in at short notice!
Life with a newborn is dynamic, and sometimes things turn out differently than planned. Complications at birth, longer hospital stays, breastfeeding problems or simply the overwhelming emotions of the first few days can mean that you miss the ideal window of opportunity for newborn photography.
The good news for you: Beautiful baby photos are also possible after the first few days!
In the third and fourth week of life, babies usually go through their first growth spurt. They become noticeably more alert, more attentive and more aware of their surroundings. Many babies can already hold their heads for brief moments and show the first, delicate signs of social interaction.
What does this mean for your photo shoot? The classic, deeply curled newborn poses are much more difficult to realize, as the babies sleep less and no longer get into the newborn pose on their own. But you can also take wonderful pictures of older babies in the newborn look. The result is wonderful photographic memories with half-opened or awake eyes, first facial expressions and authentic reactions to voices and touch. For photo sessions with older newborns, you should follow a few tips:
- Optimize the timing: Plan the baby photo shoot directly after a meal, when your baby is full and satisfied
- Prefer mornings: Most babies are even more balanced in the morning than in the afternoon
- Plan more breaks: Expect more frequent breaks for feeding, changing and soothing
- Fewer newborn poses: focus on relaxed and natural positions that the baby adopts themselves
As soon as you have made the decision for your baby photo shoot, you should contact your photographer as soon as possible. If you are interested in a photo shoot with me, I will be happy to see if I can fit you in.
Whether you should do the newborn shoot straight away or wait until the baby is three months old, for example, is a decision to be made on a case-by-case basis. You should base your decision on the development of the skin (baby acne) and your expectations, among other things.
