Enchanting newborn poses

Newborn poses: the best ideas for your newborn shoot

In newborn photography, babies are often placed in special newborn poses. In this article, I explain which poses work well for your newborn shoot and why these newborn poses are only possible in a short time frame

The first few days with a newborn are so intense and pass so quickly that many parents can hardly believe how tiny their baby once was. Newborn photography creates images that will touch you forever: tender portraits, warm family moments and the typical newborn poses that are only possible in this short window of time.

As a specialized newborn photographer in Munich, I will take you to the most popular newborn shooting poses. I’ll show you poses for classic detail shots, froggy poses and touching family photos with parents and siblings.

Baby, parents and siblings

Briefly summarized: The most popular newborn poses in newborn photography

Here you will find a brief summary of the main content of the article:

  • Three categories of poses: I differentiate between three categories of newborn poses: Poses for the baby alone, poses with the parents and poses with siblings. Each category has its own emotional character and creates magical newborn photos for you.
  • Every newborn shoot is individual: we discuss which motifs are particularly important to you before the photo shoot. During the newborn shoot itself, I adapt flexibly to the baby and use the situation for suitable poses and pictures.
  • Time window for newborn poses: The classic newborn poses are almost exclusively created in the first two weeks of life. After that, babies become more alert and active, which makes many typical newborn poses much more difficult.
Tiny details in focus

Newborn poses for the baby alone: your newborn is the center of attention

In this part of the newborn shoot, the focus is entirely on your baby. I photograph it in calm and natural poses.

  • Detail shots: If your baby is asleep at the beginning of the shoot, I like to start with detail shots. The tiny feet, little hands and gently curved ears are so delicate! Complemented with a soft wrap or a hand-knitted hat, intimate shots are created that will later make you marvel at how tiny your baby once was.
  • Wrapped pose: Wrapped in soft muslin cloths or wraps, newborns feel secure and remember the tightness of their mother’s womb. I wrap the babies loosely and lovingly. This calms them down and at the same time creates wonderful, cuddly pictures. The wrapped pose can be combined in many ways, on the bean bag, in a basket or simply on a soft blanket.
  • Prone position: The prone position is one of the most classic newborn poses. The baby lies on its tummy with its legs bent and its little bottom slightly raised. Many newborns like this position because it offers a lot of physical contact and containment. It is harmonious, timeless and beautifully accentuates your baby’s delicate proportions.
  • Side position: The side position is a natural and relaxed pose that looks particularly beautiful on calm, sleepy babies. The baby lies slightly curled up on its side with its small hands close to its face. This pose is ideal for close-ups of the face and can be complemented with various props and accessories to create the right atmosphere.
  • In a basket: A basket or bowl is one of the most popular props in a newborn shoot. The natural boundary gives the baby a sense of security, and the little miracle looks even more delicate and tiny in it. I carefully pad the basket with soft blankets so that your baby lies comfortably and securely.
  • Frog pose: The frog pose is a real classic. The baby lies on its tummy, legs bent, little hands under its chin, like a sleeping frog. This pose is almost always created as a compositing, i.e. from two separate shots that I put together afterwards. There is always a helping hand on the baby.
Gathered joy

Newborn poses with the parents: the most emotional family moments

The most beautiful pictures in a newborn shoot are often taken when the whole family is together. These moments show the bond and love in an unposed, authentic and touching way.

  • Baby on mom’s breast: mom lies relaxed, the newborn lies on her breast. Both are immersed in a silent, deep bond. This pose needs no props. It shows what counts in those first few days: the pure love between mother and child. I prefer to photograph these moments in soft window light.
  • Baby in dad’s hands: The father’s big hands holding the tiny baby: this contrast in size is moving every time. Dad holds his little miracle gently in both hands, sometimes just the little feet or the little head. These shots show strength and tenderness at the same time and are one of many families’ favorite images from the newborn shoot.
  • Kiss on the forehead: mom or dad leans down to their newborn and gives it a gentle kiss on the forehead. The emotions that arise are so real and so intense that the images touch the heart for years to come. I pay particular attention to the natural light and the calm atmosphere so that I can capture this intimate moment as authentically as possible.
  • Parents hold the baby together: mom and dad put their hands together around their newborn. Sometimes they hold it in their arms together, sometimes they gently place their hands over each other while the baby lies in them. This pose shows the unity of the young family in its most beautiful form. I photograph these moments up close and without much staging.
  • Family portrait with a view of the baby: One parent holds the newborn in their arms, the other leans in lovingly and looks at the baby. No looking at the camera and no feigned emotion. These shots are often some of the most touching in newborn shoots because they show exactly what parents feel in those first few days: overwhelming love and amazement.
Curious looks

Newborn poses with siblings: Gentle and full of love

When a sibling really notices the baby for the first time, it is one of the most touching moments in newborn photography. The curiosity, the cautious stroking and the proud look are special moments that show how you are growing together.

  • Side by side: The sibling lies down next to the newborn, on a soft blanket or in bed. For many parents, this moment together is the most emotional image of the whole shoot. Some siblings immediately cuddle up to the baby, while others first observe it curiously from a distance. Both are beautiful and make for unforgettable pictures.
  • Kiss on the head: The sibling bends down to their baby and gives them a kiss on the head. What sounds so simple often results in the most beautiful pictures of the shoot. This moment is particularly touching when the older child gives it of their own accord: unplanned, spontaneous and full of tenderness.
  • Little hands: The newborn lies still, the sibling places his or her hand on the baby’s tiny fingers or feet. This size comparison between a small child’s hand and an even smaller baby’s hand is interesting to photograph. The sibling often looks at the baby with curiosity.
  • Sibling holding the baby: The older child sits upright, the newborn lies gently in his lap. The parents’ hands are safely in the background. This pose beautifully shows how big the sibling suddenly looks and how much pride there is in this moment. Many children’s faces light up as they feel how important they are.
  • Looking together: The sibling leans over the newborn and looks at it curiously. The baby continues to sleep or opens its eyes for a brief moment. This silent encounter between the two, often still without words, is one of the most special moments in a newborn shoot. What the two of them experience together at this moment can be captured beautifully in pictures.
  • The whole family: everyone is together: Parents, sibling and newborn. No arranging and no forced smiles. Simply the family as it really is at this moment: a little tired perhaps, but overjoyed and grown together. These family pictures are often the ones that touch parents’ hearts the most.
In the first two weeks

Which newborn poses are possible in which time window?

Newborns are still very sleepy in their first days of life and have a natural flexibility that allows them to be gently placed in the typical newborn poses. The time window for this is short: the ideal period for a newborn shoot is between the fourth and fourteenth day of life. After that, babies become more alert and active and are much more difficult to place in quiet sleeping positions.

This does not mean that you can no longer have beautiful pictures taken after the first two weeks. But the dreamy, delicate newborn poses that many parents want are easiest to create during this time frame. That’s why I recommend booking your newborn shoot during your pregnancy and having your newborn shoot within the first two weeks after the birth.

Careful handling

Safety first: What you should know

The safety of your baby is the top priority in every newborn shoot, even before every picture request and every pose. As a specially trained newborn photographer, I have learned how to position newborns safely, when to stop a pose and how to keep an eye on the baby throughout the shoot.

I have the necessary experience and calmness to keep your baby safe and comfortable at all times. If your baby needs a break, we will take a break. If a pose doesn’t work, we change. I have summarized everything else on the subject in my article“Safety during a newborn shoot“.

Conclusion: How we find the right poses for your newborn shoot

I plan the newborn shoot based on our preliminary talk. I will bring suitable accessories and wraps and adapt the process to your wishes. You don’t have to worry about anything: I’ll gently guide you through the shoot and suggest whatever is appropriate.

You and your baby will decide together which poses will be used for your newborn shoot. If your baby is sleeping soundly, we use the time for the classic newborn poses on the bean bag or in the basket. If it is awake and curious, we will create wonderful portraits with open eyes. And when the whole family is together, I photograph the real emotional moments that can’t be planned.

The poses in this article are a small selection of well-known and popular newborn poses. The repertoire from which we can draw is of course much larger.
