A bodysuit or a onesie? Pastel or earth tones? And what should Mom, Dad, and the siblings wear? This guide shows you how to put together outfits, colors, and accessories for your newborn photoshoot

The first few days with your baby go by quickly, and you’ll want to capture them in beautiful photos. When it comes to choosing outfits for the newborn photoshoot, many questions arise: What should the baby wear? Which colors work best? And what should the rest of the family wear? As a newborn photographer, I’m sharing my tried-and-true tips here to help ensure the outfits look calm and harmonious—and that your baby remains the center of attention.

All the essentials in a nutshell

In a nutshell: Harmonious colors and stylish clothing

Here you will find a brief summary of the main content of the article:

  • Natural fibers such as organic cotton, bamboo, or modal are best suited for newborn outfits because they are gentle on a baby’s sensitive skin and allow for freedom of movement in various poses.
  • Pastel shades and neutral colors draw the eye to the baby, while bold colors and eye-catching patterns distract from the subject.
  • The outfits of the baby, parents, and siblings look harmonious when their colors are coordinated but not identical.
  • Having two or three outfits ready gives you some leeway during the photo shoot to respond flexibly to the baby’s mood.
  • Accessories such as hats, scarves, or heirlooms add a personal touch and should be soft, secure, and free of small parts.

Impact on the Entire Image

Why is the outfit important for a newborn photo shoot?

The outfit has a greater impact on the photos than many people realize. It draws the eye to the baby, ensures the baby’s comfort, and gives the entire photo series a consistent look. So the choice of clothing isn’t trivial—it plays a key role in setting the mood of your photos:

  • It draws the eye. Simple clothing in muted colors highlights the delicate details: the tiny hands and feet that make a newborn so special.
  • It keeps the baby cozy. A comfortable, well-fitting outfit that doesn’t pinch and is easy to change ensures a relaxed baby. And a relaxed baby looks more natural in photos.
  • It brings the family together in the picture. When the baby, parents, and siblings coordinate their colors, it creates a harmonious overall look without appearing staged.

In practice, this means: Less is usually more. The simpler the clothing, the more space your baby has.

Bodysuits, onesies, and swaddling blankets

What should the baby wear for the newborn photo shoot?

For the baby, a simple onesie or romper in a neutral color is the best choice. It’s soft, easy to change, and lets the baby’s face and features shine through. During the newborn photoshoot, I like to replace the onesie with a soft blanket, in which I loosely wrap the baby. This makes the baby look cozy, and the photos remain varied. A few specific recommendations:

  • In the summer , a light cotton onesie is ideal ; in the winter, a soft knit onesie with a little hat.
  • Natural tones such as cream, beige, or a soft dusty pink create a particularly calming effect in the photos.
  • It’s best to have two or three outfits ready so we can stay flexible during the session and respond to your baby’s mood.

I’ll also bring along some onesies and blankets so you don’t have to worry if anything is missing. Before we undress the baby, I’ll make sure the room is comfortably warm. We’ll take as many breaks as your baby needs.

Comfortable and flexible fabrics

What kind of material is suitable for your baby’s clothes?

Soft natural fibers are best for newborns. Organic cotton, bamboo, and modal are breathable, gentle on the skin, and free of irritants that can cause skin irritation. When making your selection, it’s worth keeping a few things in mind:

  • Skin-friendly fabrics: Natural fibers are soft against the skin and do not irritate a baby’s sensitive skin. Avoid scratchy or synthetic materials that come into direct contact with the skin.
  • Certified textiles: Whenever possible, look for certifications such as GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) or OEKO-TEX. These indicate that the clothing was manufactured without harmful chemicals that could cause allergies or irritation.
  • Freedom of movement: An outfit that’s easy to put on and take off and offers enough room to move allows you to strike a variety of poses. Stretchy, soft fabrics are ideal.
  • Choose something that matches the room temperature: For warm rooms, a light piece is enough; for cooler ones, something cozy is best.

The color of the material also plays a role. Soft, natural tones help create a calm visual effect.

Pastel colors and neutral tones

What colors go well with your baby?

Soft, muted colors work best for a newborn. Pastel shades and neutral tones like beige, cream, or gray draw the eye to the baby and keep the photos calm. Bold colors and complex patterns, on the other hand, distract from the main subject. Here’s how to choose a harmonious color scheme:

  • The Effect of Colors: Pastel shades like soft pink, sky blue, or mint convey a sense of calm and emphasize your baby’s peaceful nature. Bold colors like red or orange, on the other hand, come across as loud and dominate the space.
  • A neutral base with accents: Neutral tones such as beige, gray, or creamy white create a calm foundation. Combine them with one or two accent colors—such as a soft lavender or warm peach—and the composition will remain harmonious without looking cluttered.
  • Subtle patterns: Fine stripes, understated polka dots, or a delicate floral pattern add texture to the look. Patterns that are too bold distract from the baby and are best left in the closet.
  • Matching the background: The colors of the outfit should provide a subtle contrast to the background. Too much contrast is distracting; too little makes the baby blend into the background. Finding the right balance puts your baby front and center.

Coordinated, not uniform

What will Mom and Dad wear for the photo shoot?

Parents’ outfits look best when they complement the baby’s: simple, in light or earthy tones, and color-coordinated without being identical. This keeps the focus on the baby, while still allowing you as a family to stand out as a unit. A few guidelines:

  • Coordinate your outfits within the same color palette instead of choosing exactly the same clothes.
  • Avoid flashy logos and bright patterns that might distract the baby.
  • Choose clothes that make you feel comfortable and allow you to move naturally.

For you as a mom, I recommend a flowing dress or a simple blouse in light, subtle shades. These pieces are both comfortable and flattering as your body continues to change in the first few weeks after giving birth. Choose something that makes you feel confident and that can be easily opened for breastfeeding when needed.

For Dad, a simple shirt or a solid-color polo shirt in earth tones or shades of gray works well. I go into more detail about the family’s clothing in my post on outfits for family photo shoots.

A Harmonious Family Look

What are the siblings wearing in the photo shoot?

Siblings should wear simple clothes that match the baby’s color scheme and allow them to move freely. A subtle contrast with the baby ensures that both stand out nicely—for example, a slightly bolder shade for the older child and a soft, natural white for the newborn. Here’s what to keep in mind for the siblings:

  • Comfortable and durable: Kids move around, cuddle, and run about. Clothes that let them feel free result in more relaxed photos.
  • Set aside shirts with large prints: It’s best to put away your favorite shirts with large comic-style designs for the photo shoot and choose two or three appropriate outfits instead. This avoids arguments and keeps the focus on the baby.
  • A little say in the matter: If the older child is allowed to choose between two matching items, they’re usually happy to go along with it.

I’ve summarized how you can best prepare the siblings for the big moment in my post ” Newborn Photoshoot with Siblings.”

Subtle personal touches

What accessories and props go well with this?

Accessories add subtle accents and should complement an outfit, not overshadow it. A hand-knitted hat, a delicate scarf, or a small heirloom is often all it takes to give an outfit a personal touch. Here’s how to use accessories effectively without overdoing it:

  • Personal significance: An heirloom, a gift, or an object with a story behind it adds an emotional layer to the image that you’ll recognize later on.
  • Less is more: A single, carefully chosen accessory often makes a stronger impression than a lot of props all at once.
  • Color-coordinated: A hairband, scarf, or blanket should complement the color scheme of your outfit, not clash with it.
  • Natural materials: Wood, wool, or linen go well with a baby’s delicate skin and the calm visual style.

All props should be soft and free of small, loose parts, and nothing hard or sharp should be near the newborn. You can read about how I ensure safety and comfort during a newborn photoshoot in my tips on safety for newborn photoshoots.

Inspiration for Mixing and Matching

Practical Outfit Ideas and Clothing Tips for Your Baby

To wrap things up, here are a few tried-and-true combinations to inspire you—simple, natural, and tailored to the season:

  • Classic simplicity: A simple bodysuit or onesie in a soft pastel color, paired with a delicate little hat or a soft blanket. Timeless and serene.
  • Natural and earthy: Outfits made of linen, cotton, or wool in earthy tones, paired with a natural accessory like a small basket or a wooden bowl.
  • With a theme: Small details like a delicate floral hairband or a dainty knit hat add a subtle touch to a nautical, floral, or rustic theme.
  • A memento: A hand-me-down item of clothing—such as an old christening gown or a hand-knitted blanket—gives the photo a sense of family.
  • Perfect for the season: a cozy onesie for winter, a lightweight bodysuit for summer. The season dictates the style and material.
