The early days with a baby are intense and go by quickly. In this post, you’ll learn how to prepare for and plan your family photo shoot with your baby

You’ve just had a baby and want to capture this special time as a family. In this post, you’ll learn how to plan your family photo shoot with your baby, what photo ideas work best with little ones, how to include siblings, and what to do if something comes up on the day of the shoot.

The whole family together

A Brief Summary: Memories of Those Early Days with My Baby

Here you will find a brief summary of the main contents of the article:

  • The best time to take family photos with a baby depends on how the baby is feeling that day; ideally, the baby should be well-fed and well-rested.
  • During a photo shoot with several children, it’s best to start with the sibling first, because their attention span is usually short.
  • A photo shoot with a baby usually lasts one to two hours, because scheduled breaks for breastfeeding, diaper changes, and soothing the baby are factored in.
  • Natural photos with a baby result from genuine interactions, such as cuddling and eye contact, and have a greater impact than staged poses.
  • Family photos with a baby can be taken throughout the baby’s first year—it’s never too late.

Emotions Instead of Documentation

Why is a family photo shoot especially worthwhile when you have a baby?

Because so much changes almost every day during those first few months, and that time becomes almost impossible to grasp later on. A photo shoot not only captures just how small your baby was, but also how close you are as a family. Years later, you’ll be able to relive that exact feeling.

For me, photos like these are more than just a record of those first few weeks. They capture the glances, the moments of holding, and the closeness that can easily get lost in the daily routine with a baby. Later, when you look at them, you’ll remember not just the photo, but the feeling you had back then.

Relaxed into the family shoot

How do you prepare yourselves and your baby for the photo shoot?

The most important part of getting ready is choosing the right time of day: a well-fed, well-rested baby makes all the difference. Other than that, you don’t need much—just the right things in your bag. I’ll take care of the rest; you don’t have to have everything perfectly prepared.

When is your baby at their calmest?

It’s best to do this after a nap and a meal, often in the morning. That’s when your baby is most likely to be awake, full, and content. Go by your baby’s rhythm, not a set time. If you’d like to know at what age it’s worth scheduling a photo shoot for your baby, check out our post on the best time for a baby photo shoot.

What should you pack for the baby?

Pack a small emergency kit, and you’ll be ready for anything. A change of clothes, diapers, wet wipes, a pacifier, a favorite toy, and—if you have older siblings—a small snack have all proven to be essential. When it comes to your outfits, keep them simple and color-coordinated, with minimal patterns, so all eyes stay on you. I’ll show you how to coordinate colors for everyone—including the baby—in the outfits for the family photo shoot and the newborn photoshoot.

At home or outside: Where does your baby feel most comfortable?

Both options work—the key is where your baby feels most comfortable. At home, everything is familiar and cozy, breaks are just a step away, and you have everything within reach. Outside, you have soft natural light and more space for a sibling to move around. For a photo shoot in a familiar setting, check out the options for baby photography; for an outdoor shoot, take a look at my outdoor family photo sessions.

Everyone together in front of the camera

What’s important when taking family photos with a baby and siblings?

Involve the older sibling first. Children under five rarely can stay focused for more than half an hour, so we start with them and bring the baby in when the mood is right. That’s how we create a real sense of togetherness.

A new baby changes a lot for an older child. Sometimes they’re proud, sometimes jealous—both emotions can be captured in a photo. I give the older child a small task—like gently holding the baby’s hand or singing a song to them—and before you know it, you get those candid looks you can’t stage. If the older sibling loses interest along the way, I’ll keep taking photos of the baby with you and bring the child back later.

Show Genuine Closeness

What kinds of photo ideas are suitable for a baby?

The best photos are the ones where you’re just being yourselves: the baby on Dad’s forearm, your gaze looking down instead of at the camera, those little fingers wrapped around your hand. These genuine moments make a family photo with a baby more meaningful than any elaborate pose. For general ideas that don’t focus on the baby, check out my ideas for family photo shoots; I’ve collected poses specifically for babies in the “Baby Photo Shoot Poses” section.

Authentic moments: your family in natural interaction

The most powerful photos happen when you’re not thinking about the camera. I’ll ask you to look at your baby, cuddle with him or her, or play quietly with a sibling, and I’ll capture the reactions in between. That way, you’ll get photos that feel genuine instead of posed.

Seasons and occasions for family shoots with a baby

Each season gives your photos a unique atmosphere: soft spring greens, warm autumn light, or peaceful moments indoors in winter. Special occasions like your baby’s first Christmas or first birthday are also great opportunities to capture you as a family with your baby. You can find more seasonal inspiration in my ideas for family photo shoots and for outdoor photography in the Outdoor Family Photo Shoot section.

Choose creative perspectives

Different angles add variety to your photos. When photographed from above, a baby in your arms looks especially small and secure; close-ups of hands and feet capture the delicacy of those first few weeks. I intentionally plan these perspectives into the shoot, so you don’t have to worry about them.

Include siblings and pets in the shoot

Siblings and pets are part of the family and bring lively, authentic moments. A sibling can hold the baby or show the baby something, and a calm dog is welcome to lie down next to them. To learn how to properly prepare a dog for the newborn photoshoot, read the post on newborn photoshoots with dogs; to learn how to gently include siblings in a newborn photoshoot, read the post on newborn photoshoots with siblings.

Using personal accessories and props

Personal items make your photos unique. A favorite stuffed animal, a hand-knitted blanket, or a keepsake from your own childhood tell a story that’s uniquely yours. In this case, less is usually more—one or two items are more than enough.

Stay flexible and relaxed

How do we handle challenges during a shoot?

In short: stay calm. A baby cries, gets tired, or a sibling isn’t in the mood—all of that is to be expected and no cause for concern. We have time; we’ll take breaks and pick up where we left off when everyone is ready.

The baby is restless and cries

Then we take a break. Feed the baby, change a diaper, cuddle for a moment—that’s often all it takes. Sometimes the most beautiful photos come right after you’ve comforted the baby, when the baby is fully engaged with you again. You can find more tips in the post about calming your baby during a photo shoot.

The siblings are uncooperative

A sibling doesn’t have to participate, and certainly doesn’t have to smile on command. I give them a small task or a short break and wait for the right moment. Often, they’ll relax on their own as soon as the pressure is off.

The lighting situation is difficult

I’ll take care of the lighting—that’s my part. I’ll find the right spot by the window or outdoors and work with the available natural light. You don’t need to prepare anything.

The surroundings are distracting and disruptive

If things get too hectic in one place, we move to a different spot or take a short break. A quiet environment is especially important for babies and young children so they feel safe.

Someone is tired or stressed during the shoot

That’s okay, too. A photo shoot works best when you let go of the pressure to make it perfect: I’ll guide the session, and you can just be yourselves. There’s no strict time frame you have to stick to, and the less you think about the “perfect” shot, the more natural you’ll look.

What’s on your mind
